Chard 'Fireworks'
Fireworks makes a beautiful addition to your garden (vegetable or ornamental) and a very nutritious addition to your plate. You can 'eat the rainbow' by growing just one variety! It's a celebration of colour and diversity. You'll find stems in icy white, canary yellow, zesty orange, and cerise red with leaves ranging from verdant green to deep burgundy. Say goodbye to uniformity and say hello to diverse form and colour. This is a diverse interbreeding population of plants rather than a single variety. If you dig up a seed cluster as its germinating and you'll see different coloured shoots stretching out of a single cluster. Each cluster is made up of several individual seeds, each with their own unique genetics. What a joy. Sow: April (undercover) & July (outside or undercover) for continuous supply. Plant: 4 weeks after sowing, or sow direct. Harvest: Baby leaves in 6 weeks, big leaves in 8-10 weeks. Harvest outside leaves. Beetroot 'Cylindra'
Tall, elongated beetroot which resembles something a little bit rude. We like to sow them alongside faster-maturing globe types like Wintersonne. We harvest the globe beetroot first and leave Cylindra for autumn harvests and winter storage. It's our go-to for pickled beetroot because the elongated shape makes for beautifully even slices. Sow: April-July, can be sown in modules or direct Plant: 4 weeks after sowing. Harvest: June-October Kitchen: Roast or boil. Sweet Pepper 'Lesya'
A very tasty sweet pepper with lipstick-red, heart-shaped fruits. Lesya is often touted as being one of the sweetest peppers around, we're a little dubious of the title, but what we will say is that Lesya reliably produces very tasty peppers with thick flesh, thin skins and rich flavour. And they're very popular with kids. Despite their compact size, these plants don't take well to being grown in pots. Sow: Valentines day to end March, with heat (25C) Harvest: July-September Kitchen: Pairs with savoury (olives, bacon, cured pork), aromatic (parsley, coriander, oregano, ginger), spicy (paprika, cumin, cinnamon), fats (avocado, soft cheese, eggs). Notes: Grow in greenhouse or similar. Stake plants using a tripod method - they don't get very tall but branches are liable to snap under the weight of their fruit. Red Onion 'Long Red Florence'
The sweetest onion in our catalogue with a rich flavour only found in homegrown onions. Long Red Florence is a very versatile Italian heirloom variety which can be cropped as quick-growing, bright purple salad onions or left to mature into elongated, red bulbs. The mature bulbs are so sweet and full-flavoured, delicious in salads or as a rich base for any dish. Sow in March - 3-5 seeds per modules a la Charles Dowding. Harvest fresh and you can use the stems too. Later harvests have a more pungent flavour. Not the best storage onion, best eaten within a couple of months of harvest. Panicum 'Violaceum' | Ornamental Grass Seeds
Elegant, draping seed heads which work beautifully used fresh or dry. Immature seed heads are a fresh green, maturing to a rich aubergine black. A drought-tolerant and generous grass which produces abundantly from a single sowing. The same species as red millet which has been eaten by humans for centuries but is most often grown as winter bird forage in the UK. These are wonderful wildlife plants. Grow an abundance and enjoy seeing the sparrows swooping down to eat the seeds throughout the autumn and winter. Carrot 'Little Fingers'
Little Finger is one of the best carrots to grow with children. They are fast growing, sweet tasting and a very satisfying size. The medium-long roots grow up to a finger-width wide (hence the name) so they are ideal left whole and crunched as kids snacks or crudites. Unlike most carrot varieties, Little Finger is specifically adapted to clay soils - one to try if you’re still trying to grow your first straight carrot! Sow: May until mid-July, direct sow. A robust, slow-to-bolt spinach with beautiful deep green leaves. If you're looking for a spinach to succession sow throughout the year - this is the one for you. Dwarf French Bean 'Flageolet Vert'
Flageolet beans are some of the tastiest drying beans you can grow - so creamy, so good. We think of them as luxurious legumes, grown to feed French aristocrats in 17th century. Despite their pedigree, it's incredibly difficult to find seeds of these varieties in the UK. Flageolet Vert is our offering - a very rare variety which forms beautiful pale green beans which hold their shape when cooked. The plants are very productive, dwarf types. Lettuce 'Cerbiatta'
Our favourite oak leaf lettuce. Cerbiatta brings a beautiful and unusual silhouette to your salad bowl. Originating from Italy, Cerbiatta is bright green and crunchy with a strong - for want of a better word - lettuce-y flavour. I find it very vigorous and well suited to growing for cut and come again salad greens or in a loose leaf mix. Crowned with RHS AGM award. Lettuce is a very ancient crop, originally domesticated by the ancient Egyptians for its seeds and sap which were used as a pain killer and sedative. The Romans went on to cultivate lettuce for its leaves and used it as a braising green.Sow: Feb-April undercover, May-July outside. Stagger sowings for continuous supply. Plant: 4-6 weeks after sowing, plant 20cm apart Harvest: Feb-April Kitchen: Best used in salads. Kale 'Cottagers'
Cottagers is one of the oldest kales the UK, dating back to a time when gardens weren't places to sit and admire, they were places to grow food, medicine and fibre. Cottagers is a tall, productive and exceptionally hardy variety - it will give you leaves all winter and tasty shoots in the spring. The plants are beautiful with glaucous green leaves and purple ribs. Cabbage 'Kalibos'
The most striking cabbage in the patch. Kalibos is a crisp, pointed cabbage in a shade of electric purple which is impossible to ignore. It must be very good for you too. This Eastern European heirloom is very sweet and very crisp. It's well suited to making into salads or krauts. A beautiful choice for an ornamental kitchen garden, particularly when paired with French Marigold 'Red Gem'. Acroclinium 'Pierrot' | Helipterum | Everlasting Strawflower
Ice-white papery flowers with a striking jet-black eye. A delicate strawflower which is one of the most elegant of its type. It stands beautifully well into autumn - its always one of the last cut flowers standing. Wonderful to use fresh or dried. The flowers open in the sunshine and close when its overcast. Sow: May-June (best sown direct) Harvest: Expect flowers July-October. Stem length 40-50 cm. Vase: Use fresh or dried. Dried flowers Notes: Best direct sown. Parsnip 'Thrupp'
Thrupp is a very special parsnip and an example of the wonders that can come out of community seed saving. This genetically diverse, modern-landrace parsnip was originally bred by Amanda Godber at an allotment site in Stroud, Thrupp has been stewarded by Down to Earth Stroud and the Stroud Community Seed Bank for years. It was brought to my attention by seed steward Dan Fox of Two Acre Farm in the Mendips. Dan has put lots of work into trialling, selecting and adapting the parsnip and the seed offered here has been grown on his farm. He describes them as 'proper parsnips' with very little forking - a very rare variety which is strongly adapted to the South West climate. 1g (approx 200 seeds) Pastinaca sativa

Lupin 'Lilac Javelin'
Lupins can be a bit hit-and-miss when it come to cut flowers. They're often too bulky or gawdy to sit well with other blooms. Lilac Javelin is something different. It's dainty flower heads delicately weave their way through an arrangement adding a lightness and spontaneity which is hard to replicate. Each individual flower unfurls white and a dash of yellow, ageing to a muted lilac. Very popular with bees.Plants are tall and a little gangly and benefit from staking. If you're growing them in a border, be sure to plant towards the back. Sow: March-April indoors, May outside. Helichrysum 'Fireball' | Strawflower
Large double strawflowers with papery, burnt orange petals around a cheery yellow center. A perfect addition to warm autumnal arrangements. A brilliant cut flower which can be used fresh but comes into its own when dried. Pick at the height of flowering, bind together in generous bunches and hang them to dry upside down and the colour will intensify. You'll have colourful blooms to brighten up the house and take you through the winter months and beyond. There's a reason this is known as the 'everlasting flower' and 'immortelle'. Helichrysums are Australian natives which are very robust and drought tolerant. They are avoided by deer and rabbits. Sow: Sow undercover in April or outside direct in May. Benefits from warm soil. Plant: 4 weeks after sowing Harvest: July-September. Pick when flowers are half open. Stems 80cm or longer. Vase: Can be used fresh or dry. To dry, strip off foliage, tie in a bunch and hang upside down. Flower colours will intensify. Dwarf French Bean 'Dior'
