May is a very promising month for the vegetable gardener. The birds are singing, the sun is (usually) shining and the soil is beginning to think about warming up.
If you're short on propagation space (and who isn't), then May is a brilliant month to begin sowing the bulk of your heirloom vegetable seeds outside - either in pots or directly into the soil.
Here's my list of what to sow in May, broken down into what to sow undercover, what to sow undercover OR outside and what to sow outside directly into the soil. When I say sow 'undercover' I mean sowing in pots or trays on a windowsill, greenhouse or in a polytunnel.
Sow undercover:
Pumpkins, Butternut and Winter Squash
Courgettes
Sweetcorn
French beans
Basil
Greek Basil
Stridolo
Agretti
Sow undercover or outside
Lettuce
Leeks
Spring onions
Parsley
Chard
Beetroot
Broccoli
Kale
Cabbage & Brussels Sprouts
Perennial Herbs
Sow outside direct into the soil
Carrots
Parsnips
After mid-month:
Swede
Courgettes
Squash
Sweetcorn
