For all the complaining we do about the weather, there are many wonderful things about gardening in our UK maritime climate. Top of my list are our (relatively) mild winters that open up opportunities for autumn sowings of hardy flowers and vegetables, which help extend our harvests through cooler months.
Hardy annual flowers are some of the latest seeds you can sow in the year, preferring to be sown from September-October.
Here are 10 of our best-selling hardy annuals, the ones you keep coming back to year after year. They’re all such reliable, generous bloomers which withstand even the most miserable winter. You might also notice that most of them are in very jolly colours - they’ll bring a big smile to your face when you’re harvesting them in the spring.
