Parsnip 'Thrupp'
Thrupp is a very special parsnip and an example of the wonders that can come out of community seed saving. This genetically diverse, modern-landrace parsnip was originally bred by Amanda Godber at an allotment site in Stroud, Thrupp has been stewarded by Down to Earth Stroud and the Stroud Community Seed Bank for years. It was brought to my attention by seed steward Dan Fox of Two Acre Farm in the Mendips. Dan has put lots of work into trialling, selecting and adapting the parsnip and the seed offered here has been grown on his farm. He describes them as 'proper parsnips' with very little forking - a very rare variety which is strongly adapted to the South West climate. 1g (approx 200 seeds). Silene 'Blushing Lanterns' | Bladder Campion
Blushing Lanterns is a wonderful textural cut flower with gently nodding flower heads which resemble tiny little paper lanterns. Each flower head is a dusty green, delicately veined in blush pink. As the flower head matures, a pretty white flower emerges (which attract tonnes of butterflies). A hugely productive cut flower from one spring sowing. Remember this is a perennial variety so one sowing yields years of flowers. Sow: Mar-May or Sept-Oct Plant: 30cm apart Harvest: Harvest when flowers are just starting to open or harvest pods. Ammi majus | Bishops Flower
A classic cut flower filler with pure white, lacey umbels. Plants flower generously with blooms beloved by pollinators. Sow in autumn for the biggest, earliest flowers. They are extremely popular pollinators. Sow: September-October for overwintering seedlings. Sow undercover or outside Mar-May, depending on soil conditions. Loves to be sown direct into the soil.Plant: 30cm apartHarvest: Expect 60cm stem length.Vase: For best vase life, pick when two thirds of the flowers on umbel are open. Vase life of 10 days. N.B.
